CONVENING CHAIR DR DENIZ ORTACTEPE HART I recently joined the University of Glasgow in September 2022 as a Lecturer in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL). Over the past 11 years, I have worked in Turkey, the United States, and the UK training teachers of English, Spanish, French, Chinese, and Arabic. Educational research methods, second language acquisition, language assessment, social justice language education, and language teaching methodology are some of the courses I have taught regularly so far. |

DR SULTAN TURKAN I research ways to improve educational practices for multilingual immigrant children. My research is guided by the view of language as a resource (rather than a deficiency) for effectively teaching immigrant learners. I have conducted research on the validity and fairness of assessments administered to these learners and their teachers and investigated ways to provide opportunities for immigrant children to demonstrate their funds of knowledge in assessments and classrooms. |

DR YECID ORTEGA I am a Lecturer in Applied Linguistics and TESOL at Queen's University Belfast (Northern Ireland, UK). From social justice and anti-colonial lens, my research draws upon critical complexity theories to explore the relational and sociopolitical dimensions of languages and cultures as experienced and enacted by those living in urban communities in metropolitan cities, including the most marginalized ones. |

DR TOMASZ JOHN I am a Teaching Fellow in TESOL at the University of Strathclyde in Glasgow, Scotland. With over a decade of experience, I have honed my expertise as an EAP practitioner, Head of EAP and then a Lecturer in Language Education. My commitment to the field extends beyond my daily responsibilities, as I proudly serve as a Comms Officer of the BALEAP EAP4SJ SIG and the Comms Officer of the BAAL Language and Education for Social Justice SIG, where I actively contribute to the advancement of social justice issues in language education. I am driven by a profound passion for promoting the decolonization of curriculum and fostering representation in the field of ELT. By challenging traditional paradigms and advocating for diverse perspectives, I strive to create inclusive and empowering learning environments. |

Dr Sarah Cox
Research Fellow within the Faculty for Wellbeing, Education and Language Studies at The Open University in Scotland. She has a background in ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages), refugee integration, language education and multilingualism. Before coming to the OU, Sarah worked as a senior manager in the third sector where she led a range of ESOL and integration projects. |
Dr Declan Flanegan
English language practitioner with over twenty years of experience in various contexts (EFL ESOL, EAL) and is currently a senior lecturer in EAP at Queen’s University Belfast. He is also an education coordinator for Looked After Children (LAC) and unaccompanied minors within the Belfast: Health and Social Care Trust (HSC). Declan is a sociolinguist who studies the social and cultural factors influencing linguistic communication, particularly English language education provision. His current research interests focus on the role of English language education in divided societies, intergroup relations and equality/equity in education throughout the island of Ireland. Declan has recently become the coordinator of both NATECLA (Island of Ireland) branch and IATEFL ESOL-SIG and is the NATECLA Language Issues Journal editor. |
